  This painting is an example, not only of a chickadee but the technique is called applied watercolor. click here This has been most commonly done by me in my commercial artwork. If you navigate through commercial art to Applied Watercolor you will find that there is a line art drawn in ink first then printed on watercolor paper and subsequently painted in watercolor.
  The applied watercolor you see is approx. 8"x19" and is easily repeatable in other colors.
