For years, 12 to be exact I was totally consumed with the art of
Stained Glass
I REALLY MUST STRESS THAT I AM NO LONGER BUILDING OR IN FACT
INVOLVED IN THE PRODUCTION OF STAINED GLASS WORK OTHER THAN
SURFACE PAINTING AND THAT IS QUITE INFREQUENT. ALTHOUGH I AM
MORE THAN WILLING TO DESIGN GLASS WORK I HAVE CHOSEN TO
DISPLAY THESE WORKS MERELY AS EXAMPLES OF WORK DONE.
I began by assisting a terrific artist, educated in art at the Calgary
School of Art,
named Gerry Eversole. I work with Gerry on a small newspaper where he
was the
production manager and I was learning, slowly. Gerry asked me to help
him in
his studio an a piece basis. Which I did building tiffany lamps at first
and other
glass projects. He is a great fellow with a lot of experience.
After that I was hired by the Provincial Government to
participate
in the restoration of the British Columbia
Parliament Buildings Restoration Project in
the early 1970s. I got
that job by frequently visiting the project in Victoria close to where I
lived. There I made
friends with the fellow who was restoring the stained glass. His name
was Bruce Allen. We
spoke many times while he worked in a studio set up for him on the
corner of Douglas St.
and Government St. The building is no longer there. It was scheduled to
be torn now after
the completion of the project. Bruce was involved in a car accident one
week end and I
was unable to find him on the job. His foreman said that he had broken
his back and would
be convalescing. I asked it I could relieve him for the time he took to
get well and that is how
I began working there. It took more than a year but he did return. Bruce
decided not to
continue with the project and moved to San Francisco California. Where
we lost touch.
I am not just positive of the exact duration of time I worked the
project but I believe it was
somewhere between two and three years. When I left about a year before
completion I
turned over the position to a great friend John McMillan. He remained
involved in glass for
many years and became a successful realtor. If you need one please look
him up.
The parliament buildings in Victoria are a unmistakable sight when
visiting Victoria. The
stained glass in the buildings were done in a traditional way by
artisans from England mostly. |
